Includes material relating to expeditions sponsored by Harvard medical School's Department of Tropical Medicine, such as correspondence, notes, and maps from the Hamilton Rice 7th Expedition to the Amazon (1924-1925), and later trips to Africa, Central America, and Mexico. Other Shattuck materials include correspondence, manuscripts of writings, memorabilia, and reprints. The collection also contains Francis Weld Peabody papers, such as manuscripts of writings and speeches, photographs, research and other materials.

Peabody (Harvard, M.D. 1907) was the first resident physician at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, 1913-1921, and after 1922 served as a consulting physician. He taught medicine at the Harvard Medical School, 1920-1927, and was first director of the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory at the Boston City Hospital, 1922-1927.
